Trump penguin meme sparks widespread media backlash over Greenland

The left can’t meme. This has been a reality on the Internet for years. And they get angry when the truth does that. This has been a reality since the beginning of the president’s political era Donald Trump. I still remember my favorite Trump meme – the one that brought back his WWE look, but turned him into a character 2017 CNN Presidential Strike. cheerful. More so because of media panic.

Nearly nine years later, Trump is still laughing, and the press is still angry. The latest meme combines Trump with the infamous solitary penguin. The White House put together an iconic photo of the penguin walking alone, with Trump joining him. Add an American flag and some Greenland mountains with the caption: “Hug the penguin.”

The response was predictable: a storm of angry comments and appalling headlines. First, the outrageous: Forbes chimed in to “explain the nihilistic penguin meme on TikTok.” Shockingly, they weren’t the only ones putting the phrase “nihilist penguin” in the headlines, which will hopefully be a first for humanity. USA Today, The Independent, and The Week all chimed in with headlines similar to Words of the Day. There hasn’t been this much hate towards the Penguin since the last Batman movie.

Then the berserkers came from the left. Under the title “Climate change“, Gizmodo complained, “Trump urges Americans to embrace suicidal penguin as ‘Doomsday Clock’ ticks 85 seconds to midnight.” The outlet tried to get all science by adopting a completely bogus measure of how close Doomsday is. These are the same people who are convinced that Mother Nature is very angry with humanity.

US Trade Representative shrugs off world leaders’ criticism of Trump amid Davos backlash

To dig further, he wrote: “There are no penguins in Greenland.”

I want to write about how no one cared, but apparently some in the press did. So, I’ll commit to not caring about anyone important. There are only about 57,000 people in Greenland. It has to look like a well-written version of the Falkland Islands (population 3,500, sheep 500,000) for people to care about Greenland penguins. In other words, Greenland has similar populations to major cities like Kalamazoo, Michigan, and near me, Gainesville, Georgia, but is larger than Alaska and California combined. Hee Haw fans chanted “Hello!”

Trump and his multimedia cronies don’t care about any of that. They care that they kept the whole world talking Trump and Greenland. And Trump. The press looked ridiculous because of this. This is a win, another win, another win. Oh, and win.

Broadcast bias: The 10 worst examples of media misconduct in 2025

It’s unfortunate that Gizmodo wasn’t the only site made of soulless and humorless rebukes – Internet Karens. Lefty Mediaite unwittingly embraced the “Ackchyually” meme while complaining that “White House Deploys AI Slop for Trump and a Penguin in Greenland, Which Has No Penguins.” The Hill went in the same direction, noting that “users on social media were quick to mock the White House post, noting that penguins live almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere.”

The bitter folks at The Daily Beast had to remind their equally bitter readers of that Omar Trump Its headline read: “Trump, 79, revives Greenland fantasy with ridiculous AI post.” Yes, at 79 years old, he’s still better at this game than the entire Daily Beast crew. “White House meme about Greenland penguin sparks jokes and backlash,” Newsweek warned. Horrors, not “backlash.” This never happens.

The image of the Penguin before Trump comes from a 2007 documentary called “Encounters at the End of the World.” The White House responded to the ridiculous media hype, writing: “The Penguin does not concern himself with the opinions of those he does not understand.” This is a paraphrase of the famous saying: “A lion does not concern himself with the opinions of sheep.” Sheep, my leftist journalist friends, means you will.

Regular people online (i.e., not Gizmodo employees) also know that the penguin is a metaphor. Conservatives, especially conservative men, see the penguin going out on his own as a declaration that they don’t have to follow the crowd, that the penguin “no longer belongs where everyone else is,” as one TikToker put it. That he can make his way in the world.

This is the essence of Trump’s appeal. The essence of America First’s policy is to reverse the global nightmare that exported jobs and imported workers. The United States does not have to do what other countries do. The United States does not have to commit cultural suicide, adopt open borders, or censor expression on the Internet like Europe and the rest of the West. We don’t have to destroy ourselves in a modern version of World War I, like Russia. We can be strong, independent and successful.

We are not that 1985 propaganda hit, “We are the world.” We are penguins. Trump gets it. The press and its leftist allies will never do that.
