The officers were heard trying to calm the situation, repeatedly ordering him to “put the knife down,” but Chakraborty continued to move toward the officer, according to the NYPD.
A woman was seen in the footage trying to block Chakraborty with her arm, but he continued to move forward while holding the knife. The footage shows the New York Police officer repositioning himself in the hallway of the house and closing the door between him and the living room.

According to the NYPD, Chakraborty pushed open the door and headed toward the officer with the knife.
The officer fired his weapon, striking Chakraborty four times. He was transferred to the hospital, where he remains in intensive care and his condition is stable but critical.
The clip released by the NYPD begins with audio of a 911 call from a “civilian witness” stating that Chakraborty was having an accident. Mental health episode He threw a glass at the wall. The caller called EMS, not the police, and requested an ambulance so that Chakraborty could be involuntarily transported to the hospital.
The incident is being investigated by the Queens District Attorney’s Office, with initial reports indicating that prosecutors are considering a possible attempted murder indictment.

“By watching this footage, it is clear to me that what Jabez needs is mental health treatment, not criminal prosecution from a prosecutor,” the mayor said. “We are talking about a family experiencing the kind of pain that no family should have to endure, and about an individual who has lived with schizophrenia for many years.”
“A person experiencing a mental health episode does not always have to be served first or exclusively by a police officer. It is important for us to have all options available,” he added.

Mamdani said he met Chakraborty’s family, who criticized him for his initial reaction to the shooting. The mayor said hours after the shooting that police “encountered an individual with a knife” and that he was “grateful for the first responders who put themselves on the line every day to keep our communities safe.”
Chakraborty’s family issued a statement on Wednesday making the accusation Law enforcement Of causing the situation to “rapidly and unnecessarily escalate”.
“Instead of calming the situation, the officer escalated further by pulling his gun and shouting orders at Gebez,” the family wrote. “Within a minute of the NYPD’s arrival, Jabez was shot multiple times and nearly killed, while he had been quietly eating just minutes before.”
The family called on the Queens DA’s office to “drop the case against our son,” and called on the NYPD to release additional body camera footage of the incident.
The family said police officers should not be responding to calls for medical support.

“Given our experience and the experience of many other families, we are asking the sheriff for systems by which we can call non-police responders,” the family wrote. “We call for changes where the needs of families are centered in the aftermath of such incidents rather than having them experience further trauma again and again.”
The body camera footage “makes clear that these police officers entered into a dangerous, unpredictable, fast-moving situation,” Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association, said in a statement to Fox News Digital.
He added: “There was no time or space for them to calm the situation before they were forced to act.” “They did their jobs with professionalism and restraint under terrible conditions.”
