‘Likable’ elementary teacher killed in car crash due to illegal escape from ICE: DHS

The crash happened around 7:45 a.m. Monday at a busy intersection, according to the Chatham County Police Department. Officers who rushed to the scene found two cars involved. Both drivers were taken to the hospital, where the driver was pronounced dead. The driver, identified as 38-year-old Oscar Vasquez Lopez, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools announced that the victim was Dr. Linda Davis, a teacher at Hessey K-8 School. Counselors will be available at school this week to support students and staff, the school district said in a statement.

“Dr. Linda Davis was a Dear member of our school family “Her loss has hit us hard,” the Heisei K-8 school said in a statement.

Police said there were no passengers in either vehicle. A second pedestrian vehicle was also involved in the accident, but no injuries were reported and no one from that vehicle required medical treatment.

It was Vasquez Lopez He was detained He is expected to be booked into the Chatham County Detention Center. He faces charges of first-degree vehicular homicide, reckless driving, driving without a valid license, and failure to obey a traffic control device.

The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement ICE officers attempted to arrest him Vasquez Lopez, whom the agency described as a Guatemalan citizen with a final deportation order issued by a federal judge in 2024.

He initially complied with a traffic stop but then fled, made a U-turn and ran a red light before colliding with another vehicle, the agency said.

Assistant Secretary of State Tricia McLaughlin called the incident an “absolute tragedy” and said escaping federal law enforcement is both a crime and dangerous.

“This murder is an absolute tragedy and a devastating result Politicians and the media “Continuously denigrating ICE officers and encouraging those here illegally to resist arrest is a felony,” McLaughlin said. “These dangerous tactics put people’s lives at risk. Fleeing and resisting federal law enforcement is not only a crime, it is extremely dangerous and puts oneself, our officers, and innocent civilians in danger. And now, an innocent bystander has lost his life.”

Local police said they were not involved in the federal operation, attempted to stop or pursue, and were not aware of enforcement actions until after the incident.

Routine patrol officers were near the scene and responded almost immediately, authorities said.
