The Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns of the danger of avalanches in Switzerland, Austria and France

the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Authorities on Friday issued a “significantly increased avalanche danger” warning in parts of Switzerland, Austria and France, and asked Americans abroad to monitor local avalanche forecasts.
This warning comes after dozens were killed in avalanches across Europe this season so far.
“Authorities have reported a significant increase in avalanche danger in parts of Switzerland, Austria and France,” the State Department wrote in the advisory. Monitor conditions via the European Avalanche Warning Service: https://avalanches.org“.
An alert from the US Embassy in Austria said that Austrian authorities reported a “significant increase in the risk of avalanches in Alpine regions,” with parts of Tyrol and Vorarlberg reaching danger level 4, which is considered high, and other alpine regions at danger level 3, which is “substantial.”

“At Danger Level 4, avalanches can occur very easily, and large to very large natural avalanches can be expected,” the embassy wrote. “Exposed transport routes may be at risk. Conditions are too dangerous for snow sports outside of marked, open trails. Local authorities may proactively close certain areas and prohibit access.”

The embassy said Americans in those areas should monitor avalanche forecasts, listen to local authorities, avoid activities in remote areas, and stay on marked trails.

The US Embassy in Switzerland also reported a “significant increase in avalanche danger”, with large areas in the cantons of Valais and Graubünden at risk level 4, among others. Alpine regions of Switzerland Liechtenstein is at level 3.”
In France, the US Embassy also reported “a strong or very strong risk of avalanches in the area.” Alpine regions of France Along the borders with Italy and Switzerland, including the Hautes Alpes, Isere, Savoie and Haute-Savoie.
