Anti-ICE protests in Milan ahead of the Winter Olympics over plans to deploy agents

Hundreds of protesters gathered in Milan on Saturday amid the announcement that US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents would be deployed to this year’s Games. US embassy officials told The Associated Press on Tuesday ICE agents will support diplomacy Security detail and will not conduct any immigration enforcement operations.

“It is clear that ICE does not conduct immigration enforcement operations in foreign countries,” the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement.

“This is a militia that kills, a militia that enters people’s homes and signs their special permits. It is clear that they are not welcome in Milan, without a doubt,” Sala told RTL 102 radio before revealing ICE’s security involvement.

However, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantidosi said on Saturday that although he had no information about ICE’s participation in the Olympics, he “did not see what the problem would be,” according to the ANSA news agency.
