The Canadians went on the power play late in the third period while still holding the USA team scoreless, but the USA was able to put the game away with just over four minutes left in the game. With the puck in Canada’s zone and about 2:30 to go, the Americans pulled their goalie, and the risk proved worth it, as captain Hilary Knight wristed it from the top of the zone to tie the game and eventually force overtime. After regulation, the shots were 29-28 in favor of Canada.
Four minutes and seven seconds into overtime, Megan Keller made a great move and scored the puck past the Canadian goalkeeper to preserve the gold medal. It’s the Americans’ first gold medal since 2018.
Team Canada lost two games throughout the Olympics, both to the United States, which was undefeated.
