Virginia passes 15 anti-gun bills in 60 days as Spanberger pledges to sign

On March 14, the Virginia General Assembly concluded its 2026 legislative session and passed more than 15 gun control legislation. In just 60 days, the anti-gun left has virtually revoked the gun rights of millions of law-abiding Virginians.

Their crown jewel of tyranny? SB 749 and HB 217, which are the so-called “assault weapons” ban bills.

These identical bills have landed on the desk of the newly elected Democratic governor. Abigail Spanberger During the final days of the legislative session, they are currently awaiting its signature.

She promised to sign it into law.

For many years, Gun Owners of America (GOA) and our dedicated members have stood against these unconstitutional abuses that have surfaced in state legislatures across the country.

Just a few weeks ago, through overwhelming grassroots activism and pressure from gun rights organizations like the Goa government, a similar ban on “assault weapons” in 2013 was defeated. New Mexico. And last year in Virginia, former Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin vetoed 27 gun control bills — including a ban on “assault weapons.”

But with the election of Spanberger-backed billionaire Michael Bloomberg in November 2025, the governor’s seat is now occupied by a rubber stamp of approval for the extremist gun control lobby. Anti-gun Democrats also flipped more than a dozen pro-gun seats in the Virginia House of Delegates while also maintaining a slim majority in the Virginia Senate.

Within hours of taking control of the governor’s mansion and the legislature, anti-gun lawmakers began drafting several gun control measures, promising to pass them through the General Assembly with astonishing speed.

Make no mistake: SB 749/HB 217 has nothing to do with “safety” and everything to do with removing your device Second Amendment rights. This legislation targets America’s most popular firearms, tools used by millions of law-abiding citizens for self-defense, competition, and sports. According to the FBI, twice as many people are killed by fists as by guns of any kind. And more than three times as much with knives. However, anti-gun extremists want us to believe that semi-automatic firearms should be banned.

Gun rights on private property are debated in the Supreme Court

But by arbitrarily classifying rifles, handguns and semi-automatic rifles as “assault firearms” based on shared features like collapsible stocks or threaded barrels, anti-gunners are effectively removing your ability to defend yourself and your family with the tool of your choice.

Furthermore, the legislation targets standard-capacity magazines, describing anything over 15 rounds as a “large-capacity ammunition feeding device.”

The Justice Department promises “more action” on gun rights through its new Second Amendment Enforcement Division

There is no historical tradition of banning the country’s most common firearms. There is no constitutional basis to target certain semi-automatic firearms and use state authority to punish anyone who buys, sells, or transfers a gun after July 1, 2026.

The anti-gun Democrats’ argument that these are “weapons of war” is a lazy buzzword. These weapons are the modern equivalent of the rifle – the standard arm of the citizen soldier.

Let’s be clear – the Second Amendment was not written for deer hunting; It was written to ensure that the “body of the people” would always have the means to resist tyrannical government.

“The Show” hosts defend gun ownership as a check on authoritarianism after years of offering criticism of gun rights

When George Mason wrote Virginia Declaration of RightsHe didn’t mince words when it came to our right to own firearms. “A well regulated militia, consisting of the body of the people, and trained in arms, is the proper, natural, and safe defense of a free state, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms, therefore, shall not be infringed…”

It is easy to see where the inspiration for the Second Amendment to the US Bill of Rights came from.

By stripping Virginians of these tools, Spanberger and her allies are deliberately shifting the balance of power from the people to the state and endangering freedom and liberty in the process. They have clearly forgotten, or worse, are deliberately ignoring the motto of this great commonwealth: “Sic semper tyrannis,” which translates to “Thus always go to tyrants.”

Within hours of taking control of the governor’s mansion and the legislature, anti-gun lawmakers began drafting several gun control laws, promising to pass the General Assembly with astonishing speed.

Make no mistake – America’s gun owners will not stand idly by while Spanberger’s Virginia government tosses our gun rights into the trash.

The Gun Owners Foundation – the legal wing of GOA – is already working with our friends at the Virginia Citizens Defense League to challenge these violations in court. No law-abiding Virginian should be subject to such heinous and un-American laws.

The political and legal battles to restore gun rights in Virginia that lie ahead will be long and difficult, but Virginia government will persist until every word about gun control is rescinded. As we fight, we carry the words of the great Founding Father Patrick Henry of Virginia who lived his entire life with absolute resolve, “The great end is that every man should be armed. And every able man may bear arms.”
