Zelle Payment Cruise Scam Puts Michigan Family on No-Sail List

L. Williams found a cruise consultant online who booked her family a week later Freedom Carnival. Great price. One catch. He accepted only Zell. Sent $3,556. The family sailed in the western Caribbean. Gorgeous sunset. Great memories.

Five years later, I tried to book another cruise. no.

Carnival told her she was on the “no sailing” list. It turns out her “adviser” pocketed Zell’s cash, then used a stolen credit card to book the flight. When the real cardholder disputed the charge, Williams took the blame.

Scammers are circling like sharks

Williams’ story is not a one-off. More than 38 million people are expected to travel in 2026, and scammers know it. Here are the big negatives I see.

  • Google trap. Fake cruise line phone numbers appear in search results. One man called what he thought was Carnival’s customer service line and was charged a “docking fee” of $650 per person. This is nothing. Real cruise lines don’t charge surprise fees over the phone. Always go directly to the official website for contact information.
  • Free cruise postcard. Got one in the mail? Toss it. The fine print buries you with hundreds of dollars in hidden fees and windowless cabins with bunk beds. How romantic. One investigation found that the company behind these changes bears its name every year, so you can’t search for it.

  • Facebook agent. Scammers pose Travel agents in Facebook groups and take payments through Zelle, Venmo, or Cash App. Then they disappear. These apps do not have any buyer protection. It’s to send money to people you trust, not strangers selling Caribbean vacations.
  • Your three rules: Always pay by credit card. Never call customer care number through Google search, go to the official website. If you want a travel agent, check him out on ASTA.org.

Book smartly and you’ll be sipping something tropical in just a few weeks. Book carelessly and you may end up on a “no sailing” list, which, ironically, is the worst kind of cruise control.
