An earthquake strikes off the coast of Japan, and a tsunami warning is issued

A strong earthquake occurred off the northern coast of Japan on Monday afternoon, prompting the Japan Meteorological Agency to issue a tsunami warning for the region.
The agency said the quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 7.5, occurred off the coast of Sanriku in northern Japan at around 4:53 p.m. local time, at a depth of about 6 miles below sea level.

The agency noted that a tsunami with a height of about 2.6 feet was identified in Koji Port in Iwate Prefecture, while a tsunami with a height of 1.3 feet was found in a different port in the prefecture.
The agency indicated that a tsunami up to 10 feet high could hit the area.
